Sometimes it can be hard to find a reason to smile. We do everything in the world to keep bust, make goals, and be better. Happiness in sot always high on the list when we are simply trying to survive the daily grind. The answer to a happier life and better health could be as simple as  putting a smile on your face.

How Does Smiling Affect My Brain?

Smiling sends a message to your brain that can positively affect your health and happiness. The simple act of smiling activates the release of neuropeptides. Neuropeptides are how neurons speak to each other, they tell your body when you are happy, sad, angry, or indifferent. In response to a smile your body also releases dopamine, endorphins and serotonin which are neurotransmitters that further inform your body that you are in a good mood. Practicing smiling every day can also retrain the brain into creating more positive thought patterns.

How Does Smiling Affect My Body?

The release of the “feel good” neurotransmitters leads to just that. They have an overall positive affect on the body, relaxing the body and in some cases lowering the blood pressure.  Endorphins also act as a natural pain reliever, with all of the positives and none of the side affects of pain relieving drugs. The Serotonin released is also to body’s natural antidepressant. Smiling also releases tension in the cells of the body by encouraging a sense of overall balance in the body. Smiles also give your immune system a little boost which can lead to a longer, healthier life.

How Does My Smile Affect Others?

Believe it or not, smiles are contagious!!! Seeing someone smile can activate the cingulate cortex, which is a part of the brain involved in emotion formation and processing. Most people will unconsciously respond to a smile with a smile, if not, they are likely consciously fighting it. In addition, people will view you differently when you are smiling. People who smile are generally seen more positively, as more attractive and competent than those who don’t smile as often.

How Does My Smile Change The World?

In addition to changing your outlook on the world by cause more positive thinking habits, smiling can make you more productive, creative and approachable. Positive emotions have proven to be quite invigorating in the workplace as negative one prove to be more draining. Since emotion, learning, and decision making are so closely related in the brain, Practicing your smile also trains your brain to approach problems differently and more comprehensively. A Smile will help you see the world in a different light and will help others see you differently as well.


Smiling has so many benefits that lots of people never tap into just because they cant find a “reason” to smile. NEWS FLASH smiling is an exercise just like any other physical activity. You don’t need a reason to work it out from time anyway, I fake smile will do just as well in most situations. If doing something that makes you happy makes it easier, then do something. Either way, smile! Its good for you.
